Program Notes

I composed Migration in 1981 while a graduate composition student at Michigan State University. As the title implies, the piece, to my ear, conveys a sense of traveling from something familiar to somewhere new. That new location might be geographical, or a new emotional region we sometimes discover inside ourselves. And we get there through a mixture of struggle, anxiety anticipation and joy.

Listen to the Michigan State University Wind Symphony, directed by Stanley DeRusha, play Migration.
